Rachel Moss is a bad person
Rachel Moss, AKA [info]hypersurfaces took pictures of people at wiscon... mostly pictures of large women, but also of some children...(pictures which included name badges, and thus peoples identities). Then she posted them to a Something Awful, and wrote up hateful descriptions of the women and children in the pictures. And encouraged others to do so. She was so successful, that now people are pulling down wiscon tagged photos from my flickr stream, and many others, and posting them to SA, with more captions, and photo shop and stuff.

Rachel Moss is now indignant that people are angry with her. She's a sick woman with problems, but she's hurt a lot of people who were attending a supposedly safe space. Fuck Rachel Moss.

More details about the incident can be found here and here.

I would still rather you said "Rachel Moss did something bad."

There are very few people in the world who deserve the epithet "bad person".

Then,I suppose "fuckin lowlife sacka-shit douchebag" might seem a bit harsh to you?

Coming a bit late to the party aren't you?

Rachel Moss is being harassed by the community to the point where they are calling he boss trying to get him to fire her or make her take sensitivity training and everyone around her - and plastering her name all over the place so that her friends can do the same. She also asked SA to take the article down.

That's what upsets her.

The rest of it is just a lot of internet bullies making fun of fat people and then another group of internet bullies passively-aggressively congratulate each other on harassment tactics (one of the chief ones being to "feel concerned about" Rachel Moss). It's something that I really should just look away from. At least the SA/SASS people know that they are assholes and don't cover up their shit in a veneer of "concern" and "fat-positive discourse".

actually, I don't think the rumors of people calling her boss are true. Feel free to provide evidence otherwise. People did contact her boss, but I can't call that overly harsh. When racists attack me on ABW I do not hesitate to contact their workplace. Not only because racists should be exposed for the lowlifes they are but because they need to understand that they are NOT safe, they do NOT have the anonymity they think they do, and that if they don't feel comfortable with their boss knowing that they engaged in racism at me directly and at black people in general, perhaps they will realize they shouldn't fucking do that.

The same goes for Rachel. though you and many others may not consider bigotry against large people to be just as disgusting and depraved as bigotry against people of color or women, I do. because it's still fucking bigotry and bigots need to be not coddled, but shamed and shunned. It's one thing to discuss with people their unconscious biases, to engage with them and point out their prejudces, and attempt to educate. For a large chunk of people, I a willing to do that. But when the line crosses over into harassment -- and what she did is definitely harassment, though perhaps not enough for a legal charge -- then I stop educating and start swinging the clue by 4.

Being a white male (I assume from your picture -- you probably benefit from white privilege even if not -- I don't expect you to understand what it's like to be the brunt of scary bigotry every damn day of your life. And while you can dismiss the sass people as just internet bullies without a thought given to how their words and actions affect others, I cannot live in the candy-colored dreamworld you do. I have to exist in reality.

I can pretty much definitely count myself NOT an asshole if we're measuring such by the sass forums.

I'm also puzzled by the idea that if her boss knows about this, it -must- be because someone from WisCon contacted him or her. I know at least one UW faculty member in a closely related field who found out about this debacle without being contacted by a pissed-off victim--it's not like there's a firewall between her academic department and the rest of the internet. Her boss may have found out about what she did because they, you know, read blogs and have friends.

Agreed. In fact, I ran into 2 professors from my undergrad days, so it's not as if Academe and SF Conventions are mutually exclusive.

sorry, should have been clearer. I meant they did not call, they emailed. I make the distinction because it is less harassing to email someone with facts and evidence and to ask for a course of action than to call them up and yell. Calling first I don't think anyone did. Emailing? I have no doubt. Though I would not assume the emails were inappropriate.

So, anon, got anything else to quibble about? Maybe you'd like to sign your real name there?

so making fun of someone on the internet (with said persons face blanked out) is equivalent to trying to get them fired and kicked out of their school? Yeah, sorry but no.

Also you running back to the teacher whenever someone says something that offends you is childish as well.

One thing most of us learn when we're about 5 years old or so is that actions have consequences. You break the rules, you get punished. You lie, you get punished. It's very simple.

You and others on the internet don't seem to understand this concept. It wouldn't surprise me to know that you got away with a lot as a child and never learned about consequences. You also don't seem to understand the concept of bigotry very well.

I don't have time to teach you.

However, I will say that if you or anyone else engages in bigoted behavior, you're lucky if ALL you do is lose your job. Because it's wrong. That's it. It's wrong and if you support people who do things that are heinous, wrong, and bigoted, then you're a heinous bigot, too. Bottom line.

if all she had done was mock them on the internet, it would be different, but she harrassed and stalked people at the con, to the point where people dropped off of a panel because they didn't feel safe.

About the name badges, no one actually puts their real name on the badges. You put a user name similar to what you'd use as a LJ handle.

That said, what a wanker this bitch is. I have a friend who was there and I'm wondering about her mental health if pictures of her were posted. She already has issues around her body image. FFS

actually, at WisCon and other cons of this type (where professionals are just as likely to show up as fans, as opposed to media, anime, or other cons like that) people usually put their real names on badges. They might have their LJ handle/aka name on the badge, too, or on a sticker or pin or something But mainly people address you by your actual name. (or, in my case, my pen name, which is my actual name without the first spelled out :) )

I have to say, if one of my employees did this and I found out about it, they'd face a disciplinary enquiry of some kind - regardless of its illegality/non-illegality, behaving like this says a lot about someone's attitude and the state of their mental health.

Some of the people she harassed were fellow employees of the University of Wisconsin, who certainly have the right to report said harassment to their mutual employer, seeing as it's in violation of anti-harassment agreements that Rachel Moss signed.
