U2 vs Negativeland vs Apple Computers?!?
Anybody remember ”Negativeland's track “U2”, which extensively sampled both U2’s hit single “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and colorful studio recordings of Top 40 disc jockey Casey Kasem? Yeah. The good old days. That, and the Bestie Boys first album were a couple of the first digital shots heard round the Intellectual Property world.
Well, during the hoopla surrounding Apple's "U2" special edition Ipod, a dude with a sense of irony and social commentary tried to sell his own special, customized edition of that IPOD. On Ebay -- The Negativeland vs U2 special edition Ipod.
Basically, apples U2 special edition, with a negative land album loaded on it, and some modified box art. it was REALLY good shit... really funny. And a totally spot-on commentary vis-a-vi the state of digital music today.
But of course Apple threatened legal action, and ebay took the "offending" piece of art/ipod down from its list of auctions. Somehow, given the state of copyright, and trademarks and shit, this seems soo appropriate. Apple makes millions because people are illegally downloading songs on peer to peer networks to load onto apple hardware, and yet, Apple threatens to sue, and stifles an artistic work that comments on the whole mess.
Good luck kids. Its a strange, sad sorry ass world out there. Go listen to some Kleptunes, while you are at it.
